What are NFTs and how they will impact the photography
NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are unique digital assets on the blockchain. They can represent various types of media, including audio, video, and photography. In a nutshell, an NFT is a digital certificate of ownership that can be bought and sold on online marketplaces.
NFTs have the potential to revolutionize the way we buy and sell photos, as they offer several benefits for photographers, such as:
Proving authenticity and provenance of their work
Protecting their intellectual property rights and preventing unauthorized copying
Creating scarcity and value for their digital creations
Receiving royalties every time their work is resold
Reaching new audiences and collectors who are interested in digital art
Experimenting with new forms of expression and storytelling
How photographers are embracing NFTs and finding new markets for their work
Many photographers have already jumped on the NFT bandwagon and are seeing positive results. For example, Reuben Wu, a photographer who combines drones, light painting, and landscapes, sold one of his pieces on SuperRare for over 27 ETH (around $90,000 at the time of writing). He says that NFT sales free him up for more personal work, attracting more paying clients.
Another example is Karene Isabelle, a photographer who created a series of portraits of her family members wearing colorful garments from thrift stores. She sold her work on Foundation, a platform that allows artists to set a reserve price and let the market decide the value of their work. She attracted top collectors, including Justin Aversano, who bought one of her pieces for 10 ETH (around $33,000 at the time of writing).
Some of the most exciting NFT platforms to watch out for
There are many NFT photography projects and platforms that are worth checking out, whether you are a photographer looking to sell your work, or a collector looking to discover new talent. Here are some of them:
ExchangeArt: ExchangeArt is a fine art marketplace on Solana that allows artists to create and sell their digital artworks as NFTs. ExchangeArt features curated series, trending artists, and live auctions. Some of the artworks on ExchangeArt are inspired by cinema, abstract art, and nature.
Objkt: Objkt is the largest digital art and collectible marketplace on Tezos, where artists can mint their artworks as limited or open edition tokens. Objkt offers a variety of sales tools and auction modes, as well as curation fees for curators. Some of the artworks on Objkt are influenced by glitch art, surrealism, and pop culture.
SuperRare: SuperRare is a platform to issue, collect, and trade rare digital art backed by NFTs on Ethereum. SuperRare hosts exhibitions, features releases, and showcases trending artists and collectors. Some of the artworks on SuperRare are based on 3D animation, generative art, and photography.
